OVER FOR NOW

Broken clouds, patches

of August brightness, cut grass

fragrantly drying.

Couples are slow to

call it a day, a summer,

pick themselves up, leave.

Lingering kisses.

Being alone, take yourself

with a pinch of salt.

  1. The ever-changing absolutes of nature — clouds and sky — set out the starting-point and reference-point for the poem’s path to the vicissitudes of time and beings in time, lovers lingering in loving. THe poet is not there. This is why the poet’s emergence is so striking as he reflects on his own situation in that place and time. THe zing of the final lines comes as the reader recognizes the distance between the poet’s own recognition of himself as frail yet funny and the constant and constantly moving world around him and us.

    1. Very insightful! The symbol of salt can be contrasted to the imagery of transience. As poet, the voice at the end confirms an ongoing life within the seasons and human vicissitudes.
