THE WEDDING PARTY

A dull cloudy June

day. The photographer works

with the wedding guests.

He says smile; they smile.

The wind picks up, loosened hair

steals the attention.

blowing into eyes,

producing laughter. That’s the

shot! Hilarity!

Life can go on now.

The party breaks up, I stay

to compose myself.

  1. The poem reflects the problems of composition and perspective. It turns on ‘I stay…’. The poet both copmposes himself emotionally and perhaps artistically in a way similar to but different from how the phtoographer composed the perfect wedding picture by capturing the felicitous moment of tension released by wind. The scene as seen through the poet’s eyes is charged wtih bitrersweetness, joy and grief, which form the composition.
